Message from the Headteacher

Dear Families

This edition of the Newsletter includes a particularly timely article about High Performance Learning. Professor Deborah Eyre, the founder of the High Performance Learning organisation and a leading inspirational  light in current  thinking about pedagogy, visited the school this week. We were able to speak with Professor Eyre about the importance of continuing to ensure that our students are equipped and ready for life beyond school. At Sydenham School we are clear about the Values, Attitudes, Attributes and cognitive skills that we are working hard to ensure that all our students leave with.

We believe that this ‘toolkit’ will support our students in leading more fulfilled lives in all areas. Frequent and regular practice in developing these skills lies at the heart of the curriculum in the school. We are grateful to families for reinforcing this understanding at home with their children, for taking the time to ask them about their learning and work at school and of course for continuing to work in partnership with us as a school.

You will see too from this edition of SYD that students have been engaged in opportunities beyond school including a rewarding visit to the remarkable Bloomberg Headquarters. This was a memorable visit to a company that welcomed our students and enabled them to learn more about the world of financial technology and information.

Please see the link for the summer exam timetables for Years 11 and 13 below this article. The Year 11 Mock timetable is on the school website too.

As ever, I hope that you have a restful and enjoyable weekend with your families and friends.

Kind regards

Mrs Lowe

Summer Exam Timetables for Year 11 and Year 13

The timetables for the summer exams can be found on the school website here https://www.sydenham.lewisham.sch.uk/information/exams
Students in both year groups will be taking Mock Exams this term to help prepare them for the exams this summer. We would encourage you to take a look at the Learning Checklists that teachers have prepared for each subject on the school website. These can be found on the website page for each subject under the 'Learning Checklist' button. For example, the checklists for English can be found here https://www.sydenham.lewisham.sch.uk/curriculum/subjects/

Students should be using these checklists to organise and plan their revision and to review their progress over the following weeks and months.

Bloomberg Headquarters Year 10 Visit and Diversity Workshop - Friday 17 January 2020

A group of 29 Year 10 students were delighted to tour around the beautiful Bloomberg European Headquarters last Friday.  We all agreed that the Norman Foster designed building is stunning.  The Headquarters won the RIBA Stirling Prize for the UK's best new building in 2018.  The Bloomberg building is the world's most sustainable office - using 70% less water and 40% less energy than a typical office block.  It is also the largest stone building in the City of London.  We were treated to an excellent Diversity Workshop by one of the Bloomberg Charity Partners.

Lola commented – “The Bloomberg trip was interesting and eye opening to the many aspects of the LGBTQ plus community.  As well as, the amount of thought that went into the construction of the building”.

Rudra wrote – “I loved the Bloomberg building and the whole experience.  It was a good insight into the world of work and I would love to see more buildings like this one”.

See the link below for more details of this fascinating building:

WhiteHat Apprenticeships -  Year 11 Assembly - Monday 20 January 2020

Ayomipo and Akeem, two apprentices from WhiteHat, spoke to all Year 11 students earlier this week about the variety of apprenticeship opportunities available. Our speakers encouraged all of our students to seriously consider the apprenticeship route to gaining further qualifications.

Students can create an account at WhiteHat and will then be mentored and guided as to which opportunities to apply for.  WhiteHat apprenticeships are for 16 to 25 year olds and pay between £17,000 and £20,000 per year. WhiteHat also provide a university inspired activities for all apprentices - with Freshers events and sports clubs to join.  So do encourage your child to consider earning and learning at the same time as benefitting from an apprenticeship. For further details, please look at:

and the National Apprenticeship Government Website:

Parent Teacher Association

Thank you to everyone who has kindly volunteered to host an estate agent board outside their home ahead of PTA events. Our target was 50 and we now have 58!

If you would still like to sign up, it's not too late. Hosting a board is such a great way to advertise our events to the community, as well as a FANTASTIC way to make a contribution to the school. Each time you host a board, the PTA will receive a fee from the estate agent, which will really add up.

You will not be required to be at home when boards are put up and taken down. Once on our list, we will assume you are happy for a board each time unless you ask us to remove your name from the list.

If you are able to join this fundraising initiative and host a board (or for more information) please email the PTA at sydenhamschpta@gmail.com with the following (a text template will appear when you click the email link above)

Subject:  Estate Agent Boards
I confirm I am happy for an estate agent's board promoting Sydenham School events to be placed outside my home.

Address:                  Post Code:

Thank you, as always, for your support.
