Message from the Headteacher

Dear Families

This is the last edition of the SYD Newsletter for this term, indeed for this calendar year. We hope that you are looking forward to the festive break after what has been the darkest and coldest term in the academic year. Although the staff are looking forward to the break, equally, we have enjoyed and welcomed all that has been achieved during the course of the last few months. This includes the Winter Music Concert of course, many pictures of which you can see below.

I know that I have written the same thing for the last 3 years after each Concert, but once again, it is true. The Winter Concert was a triumph. We were treated to an evening of excellent performances from students in each key stage. The standard of music was extremely high and it was an absolute joy to see so many students performing confidently and so joyously.

The Main School Hall was packed and, as ever, your support of the school as families was remarkable. We would like to thank all of those colleagues who were responsible for making the evening such a success including Mr Dottridge, Ms Durban and Mr Thomas as well as all of our peripatetic teachers.

Sarah Armstrong, our Chair of Governors, wrote an email after the Concert, thanking the school community for such a wonderful event. She wrote:

“I thoroughly enjoyed the Winter Concert last night. It was a fabulous celebration of the students' many talents and it was wonderful to see how happy and confidently they were performing. Could you please pass my congratulations and thanks to everyone involved, on behalf of the Governing Body”.

Well done everyone. It was a fitting end to the winter term and reflected many of our values so well- collaboration, endeavour, kindness and respect.

We hope that all of our families have a lovely Christmas break. A reminder that there is a staff CPD day on Monday 6th January. All students return to school, at the normal time of 8.50am, on Tuesday 7th January 2020. We would like to thank you in advance for ensuring that your child returns to school in full school uniform, ready to soak up all that will be on offer here at school during the remainder of the academic year.

Kind regards

Mrs Lowe

PTA

Dear PTA supporters

Help raise funds for Sydenham School – Host an Estate Agent Board for our PTA events.

We are seeking as many families as possible to host an Estate Agent Board outside their home ahead of PTA events.

It is a great way to advertise our events to people passing your home and an easy way to make a contribution to the school. Each time you host a board the PTA will receive a fee from the estate agent. This can really add up.

You will not be required to be at home when boards are put up and taken down. Once on our list we will assume you are happy for a board each time unless you ask us to remove you from the list.

If you are able to join this fundraising initiative and host a board (or for more information) please email the PTA at sydenhamschpta@gmail.com with the following (automatic when you click email link above):
Subject:  Estate Agent Boards
I confirm I am happy for an estate agents board promoting Sydenham School events to be placed outside my home.

Address:                  Post Code:

Thanks as always for your support.`

News From The Library

Christmas Library Events
Over the past few weeks we held several lunchtime craft sessions where the students enjoyed making a number of dazzling creations which you may find hanging from your tree! The favourite accessory seemed to be origami decorations created from old books.

We also had a film screening in the Library after school of Tim Burton’s ‘A Nightmare Before Christmas’ which the audience loved, especially with popcorn to enjoy!

Christmas Reading
All students are able to borrow 3 books to read over the holidays so we hope you will encourage your child to call into the Library over the next few days to select some Christmas reading.
Happy reading & Happy Christmas wishes.

The Library Team

AFRIL (Action for Refugees in Lewisham)

A group of Year 10 students are currently involved in Envision’s Community-Apprentice programme. This is an inter-school competition where young people work in teams to raise awareness and funds for a charity of their choice. Sydenham are supporting AFRIL (Action for Refugees in Lewisham) which is a local charity supporting  refugees in the borough.

The team has also been partnered with Balfour Beatty in Canary Wharf as a business partner and recently held a fundraising event for AFRIL at their offices in Canary Wharf. Throughout the event, the team showed fantastic confidence, approaching employees to involve them in the activities they had designed. Through their activities the team raised an amazing £263.47 and they should be extremely proud of what they have achieved!

Costume and Theatre Careers Talk by Sarah Holmes, National Theatre, on Tuesday 19 November 2019

Sarah Holmes, Assistant Costume Supervisor at the National Theatre, spoke to an audience of 40 students about the many roles in the theatre.  It was fascinating to realise just how many teams are involved in putting on a professional theatre production.  Everyone really enjoyed finding out more about what happens backstage at this world leading theatre.

Sarah also told us about all the other schemes at the NT that our students can access.

New! From Take Flight Academy

Our new mid-week ACTING CLASSES launching this September in the professional Drama studios right here at Sydenham School!

We are thrilled to announce that these new classes will be taught by EMILY HOLT. Emily has a long career in the Performing Arts industry and trained in acting at the prestigious LAMDA (London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art).

A local mother, Emily has a young family and whilst still working professionally as Movement Director for stage & screen, she also teaches on the BA Acting & Foundation courses at LAMDA and sits on the audition panels for prospective new students. It’s safe to say these new classes are in very safe hands and we are delighted to have Emily on board at Take Flight Academy!!!

As participants in our new ACTING CLASSES, students will adopt new acting skills and techniques from around the world, experience a huge variety of fun exercises and games, perform in our own unique adaptation of a play at the end of the year AND importantly, build the vital self-confidence and self-belief that will help them to Take Flight in life!

In addition, the curriculum for our older students mirrors adult professional acting training and provides great support and foundation for both Drama & English GCSEs, National Youth Theatre auditions, Brit school or other drama school auditions.
