Message from the Headteacher

Dear Families

This edition of SYD showcases a number of events that have taken place recently and offer our students a widened range of activities. They all have a similar theme- opportunities for our students to get ‘real world’ experiences, to work with experts, as well as to think ‘beyond the box’.

The school is continuing to develop its links with STEM providers and as you can see from the pictures below we held a STEM day led by the Smallpeice Trust. It was a pleasure to visit the workshops and see the students engaged in carefully making working music speakers of their own. The students worked collaboratively in groups in order to achieve a finished product of high quality. We are grateful to both Ms Pavely and Ms Reuben for leading this initiative.

The Year 10 Employability Day involved a range of employers who spoke with Year 10 students about the world of work as well as giving the students invaluable practice mock interviews. The feedback from the students was very positive and the employers were impressed with the maturity and application of all of the students that they met.

Auditions for High School Musical took place this week. Scores of students took part and the enthusiasm and quality of entrants was high. We hope that we can find a part of some sort for everyone and we are excited about staging a whole school performance this year.

I would like to thank all of the staff involved in the High School Musical production and for giving up their time so selflessly. Similarly, I would like to thank the Music Department for all of their hard work in preparing for the Winter Music Concert which will take place on Thursday 4th of December. It would be lovely to welcome as many families as possible to this wonderful annual event.

The school Christmas Carol service is on 17th December and begins at 6pm. It takes place at the iconic St Bartholomew’s Church on Westwood Hill. Again, we hope that as many families as possible will be able to join us at this festive annual event. Thank you to all of those colleagues who are working hard to make this event a success too.

As ever, I hope that you have a lovely and restful weekend with your families and friends.

Kind regards

Mrs Lowe

Year 10 - Employability Day – 07 November 2019

On Thursday 07 November,36 employers, 2 apprentices and 3 university representatives came to meet our Year 10 students.  All Year 10 students took part in a one to one interview with an employer. The University of Westminster and Goldsmiths College representatives spoke to the students about what life at university is like. Lewisham Borough and Vidal Sassoon Apprentices, gave presentations about how much they are enjoying earning and learning with their employers.  All of the Year 10 students used the CV Builder on the Barclays Lifeskills website to compose a CV to use when seeking work experience placements.

They really enjoyed the experience of practising their interview skills. The employers were impressed by the maturity and “polish” of our students. During the evening, 280 students and their families attended the Work Experience Launch information event.  Two Year 11 students spoke of how much they had enjoyed their work experience at a local GP Surgery and at Goldsmiths College Library.  Another student told us about the extra S4S Next Gen work experience that she had undertaken and how much she had enjoyed her week of work at the UK Disney Head Office.  Well done to all of our Year 10 students for their exceptional maturity and for dressing so appropriately in 'workwear' on Employability Day. A big thank you to should go to Fiona Taylor for her organisation and leadership of this full and valuable day.

The Smallpeice Trust STEM Day- The Speaker Challenge

On Friday 22nd November, 60 Year 10 students took part in the 'Speaker Challenge' run by The Smallpeice Trust. Working in teams, students were tasked with designing and constructing a speaker that can amplify sound produced by an external device. In their teams, students soldered the components onto an amplifier circuit board, then designed a cabinet to house the components of the speaker.

The groups were able to be as creative as they liked but had to consider their target audience for the resell of the product as well as how to retain a good level of sound quality. This day gave the students an opportunity to work collaboratively and creatively to experience engineering in a new way. The day was excellent and made the participating students think about the possibility of STEM careers in the future.

The Smallpeice Trust STEM after school event- The Speaker Challenge

The Smallpeice Trust also ran an after school session on Monday 25th November for a group of Year 9 students and their families. This provided a unique opportunity for students to work collaboratively with their peers and family members and provided a chance for students to showcase the many skills they have gained across STEM subjects.

News from the PTA

Just one more week to go until the much-anticipated Winter Concert- a glorious evening that enables families to experience the incredible talent we have at Sydenham School. The PTA will be hosting their usual fantastic bar with the seasonal addition of mulled wine, hot chocolate and mince pies.

PLUS we would love you to bake or buy for us! Everyone enjoys a homemade (or shop-bought!) cake or cookie and we would really like to raise as much money as we can for the school. Please bring your goodies along with you on the night or send them into school with your child on the day. Thank you!

The PTA will also be raffling a fantastic Body Shop hamper - the perfect Christmas present for someone special. Please don't forget to buy your raffle tickets on the night. All proceeds will go towards supporting the school. See you on December 4th!

We have been given a new date for SydFest of Thursday 30 April 2020. Add it to your calendars.
