Welcome to the Sydenham School weekly e-newsletter: Edition 234

Message from the Headteacher

Dear Families

We have come to the end of the first half term of this academic year. I hope that you are looking forward to the half term break and that you have made some plans to share some time together as a family.

You will see from this edition of the SYD Newsletter that we have had considerable sporting success, in particular in the LSSSA competition. Both the players and the peer coaches from Sydenham School did a fantastic job and it is a real testimony to the excellence of their work, along with school staff of course, that we were placed first amongst all of the other schools who have traditionally been tough competitors. Well done everyone!

Taking part in the many extra-curricular activities on offer really supports students in developing new friendships and new skills. Students who take part in the many activities on offer tend to benefit the most from school life.

You will see in the ‘Events Panel’ that we will be holding our first Presentation Evening in recent years on November 1st. We are delighted to be inviting Vanessa Potter, our guest speaker to this event. Here is a link outlining Vanessa’s ‘life story’ We hope that your daughter continues to work hard and to make excellent progress during the remainder of the academic year.

We would like to thank you for your ongoing support of the school and I hope that you have a lovely half term when you get there.

Kind regards

Mrs Lowe

Year 10 Community Apprentice Team

A group of our remarkable Year 10 students have been working hard to raise awareness of 'Carers Lewisham' within the school by delivering an assembly and putting up posters around the school. They are passionate about letting other students who are young carers know that they are not alone and that support is available.

These students are currently working on a fundraising challenge, which will take place at the satellite communications company, Inmarsat. This is a great opportunity for the students to work collaboratively for a worthwhile cause, while developing their employability skills!

Year 8 LSSSA Netball (Lewisham Secondary School Sports Association)

On Thursday 11th October our Year 8 netball team entered into the Lewisham Secondary School Sports Association Netball Tournament. We hosted the tournament for the second year running, this year at St Dunstan’s College. 8 schools entered the tournament and all schools played each other to get to the final outcome. Our Year 8 team played fantastically well and showed great perseverance, teamwork and drive. The Year 8 team won most of their games, drawing only one which made them the overall winners for 2018, retaining their title from last year.

Below are the results:
1st - Sydenham School
2nd - Sydenham High School
3rd - Sedgehill School
4th - St Dunstan's College
5th - Haberdasher Knights Academy
6th - Trinity School
7th - Prendergast Vale School
8th - Connisborough College

Well done to Izzy, Jessica, Reshana, Samiat, Ellie-May, Aicha, Charlotte and Raphelle. This was a stunning outcome- well done to all of the players and an enormous thankyou goes to the staff and student coaches who contributed so much to making the event a success.

News From The Library

Author Event – Susin Nielsen
During the week beginning 15th, 30 Year 7 students attended an author event at neighbouring Sydenham High School. Susin Nielsen was visiting from Canada to promote her latest book ‘No Fixed Address’. From an early age, Susin had a dream of being a writer and her journey led her first to work for many Canadian TV shows before going on to write 6 novels, earning her considerable critical acclaim.
The students really enjoyed listening to Susin's story and Susin took the time to personally dedicate books to several students before heading off to catch her flight back to Canada.

Kent Under 16 Netball Tournament

Wednesday 11th January was a beautiful sunny day, the last Kent Tournament our current year 11 team would enter, the first of their lasts.

The team had a fantastic day, learning how to play together, welcoming back netballers from previous years and Vivienne Adam playing up, the girls had fun and enjoyed playing new positions.

The players had a fantastic day, showed great camaraderie and teamwork. We supported each other especially when things were not going our way.

Although we did not win there are memories that will last forever and a team that has and will continue to inspire a younger generation.

Well done on a superb day, a day where the Sydenham spirit really shined.

Netball Umpires

The following 8 students umpired at the LSSSA Primary Netball festival 11th October 2018

Queenie Yr10
Izzi 8D
Charlotte Yr 12
Marvellous Yr 12
Lia 9A
Imogen 9E
Chantelle 11D
Charlotte 9A

The Sydenham umpires were in charge of 16 teams spread across 4 pools

All were extremely mature and helpful in supporting all of the participating students. They shared their knowledge and experiences with the players from all of the competing schools. The coaches from the various schools were impressed with the teamwork and collaboration displayed by all.

Fast 5 British Championship

A group of Sydenham players got to experience this first hand. Some were new to netball whilst others had been to matches before.

The students watched 6 hours of entertaining games supporting Surrey Storm who sadly got knocked out in the semi- finals. Luckily though, this gave the students the chance to support a new team in the Final. They decided to support the Wasps who won in a thrilling final against Loughbourgh Lightening.

We had a fantastic day and are looking forward to watching some more live netball supporting England all the way to the Netball World Cup in 2019.

Year 7 Football

On Wednesday 10th October, the Year 7 Football Club played a friendly game against Bonus Pastor Catholic College. The afternoon consisted of four 10 minute games. The teams demonstrated a high level of skill, determination and eagerness to win.

The results for the afternoon consisted of two wins- a draw and a loss. With the high number of Year 7 students involved in the Football Club it was a great opportunity to see so many students play. Well done to all students who participated and we look forward to watching you compete in more fixtures in the months to come.

A special thank you to Ashana H in Year 11 for her excellent assistant coaching and umpiring. Ashana's help was greatly appreciated. Thank you also to Victorinne, Aisha, Mawenne, Chayma, Thaiane and Sumayo in Year 7 for helping with the set up and pack down of equipment.
