Message from the Headteacher

Dear Families

The start to term has been both busy and purposeful. As ever, the last 2 weeks have seen a variety of events and activities taking place across the school. These have included two open mornings held for prospective Year 7 families. The school has been buzzing with  visitors who have been able to see the school ‘at work’. The feedback has been excellent both verbally and in writing and a number of families have taken the time to write to say how impressed they are.

We were heavily oversubscribed last year and are pleased that the good reputation of the school remains strong and is indeed growing.

A key aspect of our provision is our ‘extra curricular’ activity offer and increasingly, we are able to attract well -known artists and speakers to the school who are able to engage and motivate our students as well as enrich the experiences that they have access to.

You will be able to see from the articles below that recently the author, Holly Bourne, visited the school to speak about and sign copies of her most recent book about mental health and well being. We were also very pleased to have been chosen by BBC Radio 1xtra to host a travelling roadshow which included  Ray BLK who is a very popular artist. Alongside other speakers, Ray BLK spoke about the importance of ‘aiming high’, working hard and fulfilling your potential.

Our continued focus on making sure that all students come to school every day and in good time relates to the key messages delivered by the Radio 1xtra team..

Standards of uniform remain high-we would like to thank you very much for ensuring that this is the case. Please can you ensure that the shirt collar worn by your child is the rever collar, as no other collar is allowed.

Finally, please can I encourage you to contact the school if there is anything that you would like to discuss  about any aspect of your child’s education. We are here to listen and to work in active partnership with you.

Duke Of Edinburgh Award

 

We are pleased to let you know that students in Year 9, Year 10 and Year 12 are now able to apply to participate in the Duke of Edinburgh Award.  

The award is a challenging programme of activities which help the individual learn new skills, support others and experience adventure.  It will give your child a great sense of achievement.  Many organisations such as employers and universities take a positive view of the Award and what it says about the person who has achieved it. 

Year 9 students have the opportunity to apply for the Bronze Award, Year 10 students are able to apply for the Silver Award and Year 12 students can apply for the Silver or Gold award.

If students are interested in applying they should collect an application form from Ms Bown in the Maths office or alternatively click on the relevant link below.  The deadline for the applications is during the week beginning the 24th of September (see letters for specific dates). Any handed in after that date will not be accepted.

Learning Journey  

As our third week back draws to a close, we are looking forwards to meeting our Key Stage 3 parents next week for our Learning Journey Evenings:

Year 8 Learning Journey Evening - Wednesday 26th September, 6pm-7pm
Year 7 Learning Journey Evening - Thursday 27th September, 6pm-7pm 

At each of the evenings, your daughter’s tutor will be available from 5.30pm until 6pm should you wish to meet with them before the formal evening begins.  Sign in is in the Dining Hall and the full event will take place in the Main School Hall.  The evenings are aimed at parents and students are not required to attend.

As explained in a previous edition of the SYD newsletter and the letter from Mrs Lowe, the purpose of the evenings is to provide you with more information about our curriculum, assessment techniques and homework so that we can work in partnership with you to support your child’s learning.  This year we are introducing changes to our assessment at Key Stage 3 and we are keen to make sure all parents understand the procedures before the first set of Progress Data is sent home.  For Year 7 Ms Slipper will also be talking about how to build growth mindsets and the importance of deliberate practice.  This session will aim to address some educational myths and give you some handy tips that you can try out at home.

Year 11 Intervention


We have been very impressed with the numbers of students using our lunchtime Study Room, which is open each day. Please continue to encourage your daughter to use the spaces at school to revise before school, at lunch time and after school.  Our Year 11 Intervention Timetable, which includes a range of additional support for the our students in their subjects is online at https://fluencycontent2-schoolwebsite.netdna-ssl.com/FileCluster/Sydenham/MainFolder/intervention-table-students.pdf.  Please use this to help your daughter plan her work over the course of the week and encourage her to attend as many sessions as possible.

News From The Library

Author Event – Holly Bourne
This week, Year 10 students had the privilege of hearing from critically acclaimed author Holly Bourne. She introduced her new book ‘Are We All Lemmings & Snowflakes?’ which deals with the mental health challenges teenagers may face. Her message was to show kindness to yourself and kindness to others to help make the world a better place. Drawing Mastery  


The Visual Arts Faculty celebrates the resilience and deliberate practice of our Year 10 students who completed a wonderful array of fine tonal drawings throughout the summer break. The following students went the extra mile with drawings of immense depth and fine rendering.

BBC Radio 1Xtra Live Inspire Me Tour

On Thursday 20th September, Year 10 students took part in BBC Radio 1Xtra’s Inspire Me Tour. The event was designed to inspire and empower young people to pursue their dreams and we were lucky to meet and hear about the experiences of the panel (Ray BLK, musician; Tolly T, journalist/podcaster; Sabrina Dixon, entrepreneur), as well as the presenter (Yasmin Evans, BBC Radio 1Xtra). Students were encouraged to share experiences of how they have been supported in the past, as well as how they have overcome problems and helped others. A number of students shared inspiring stories, while some other students were interviewed for BBC Newsbeat after the event.

Year 10 students were really impressive. They exhibited confidence, while supporting each other and the event. Many students commented on how inspired they were by taking part and how it encouraged them to organise their work experience.  The organisers of the event were also extremely impressed by our students and loved visiting Sydenham School.

SYDENHAM SCHOOL PTA MEETING

The first PTA​ meeting of the new school year will take place on
Thursday 4th October
6.30 p.m. in the School Library.
​It would be great to see lots of parents and carers there - all welcome.
