Key Stage 3 Learning Journey Evenings and Key Stage 4 Study Skills Evenings

This term we are running a series of evening sessions to help explain more about our curriculum and how families can work in partnership with us to support learning at home. They are specifically targeted at each year group and our Key Stage 4 sessions are next week.  We very much hope to see all parents there.

For each of the evenings, our tutors and Year Learning Coordinators will be present between 5.30pm and 5.55pm if you would like an informal discussion about your daughter. The formal section of the evenings will start at 6pm.

Year 11 GCSE Study Skills Evening - Wednesday 12th September, 5.30-7pm
Years 9 and 10 GCSE Study Skills Evening - Thursday 13th September, 5.30pm-7pm
Year 8 Learning Journey Evening - Wednesday 26th September, 5.30pm-7pm
Year 7 Learning Journey Evening - Thursday 27th September, 5.30pm-7pm

In addition, you will notice that your daughters have a copy of the Sydenham School Study Guide in their planners. This can be accessed through our website at the following link: and provides you with an overview of the most effective ways to revise and learn knowledge.

News From The Library

We would like to extend a warm welcome to all of our new year 7 students. We have been impressed to see many new faces in the Library this week and we can tell already, that there are some very keen readers. All year 7 students will have one English lesson per week in the Library throughout the year, which will be dedicated to reading and follow the Accelerated Reader Programme. The students will have an induction on how to get the best out of all the facilities in the Library, which is open from 8:00am until 4:50pm daily. A reminder also that all students are expected to bring a reading book to school every day as part of their school equipment and are encouraged to read independently at home for at least 20 minutes per day.

Author Event – Holly Bourne -Tuesday 18th September 2018

Holly Bourne is a critically acclaimed author of Young Adult Fiction and will be visiting Sydenham School to talk about her latest book 'Are We All Lemmings & Snowflakes'? This is an honest and heartfelt exploration of mental health, friendship and the power of compassion.

Holly will be speaking to all Year10 & 11 students in the Main School Hall. However, there will be an opportunity for all students to meet Holly at breaktime in the Library and to have her new book personally signed. The new book is available at the discounted price of £7.00 (RRP £7.99). Holly's other books will also be available.

The books can be pre-purchased via ParentPay and it would be appreciated if this could be done by Thursday 13th September to give the school time to order the books from the publisher. Books can also be paid for in cash or by cheque made payable to bookshop Tales on Moon Lane. The order must be placed in the Library, also by the 13th of September.

Update on our new lunchtime arrangements

Following both student and parental concerns about the quality of our dining experience we have moved to a split lunchtime this year. Years 7 & 8 now have a separate lunchtime which means we have half the number of students using the Dining Hall at any one time.

We will be formally reviewing the change but early indications are that the lunchtimes are much quieter and more pleasant for everyone. Students are able to remain at their dining table for the whole of the lunchtime and do not have to rush their lunch.

We will keep you updated as the term goes on.

Ending  single use plastic water bottles

Most students have returned to school with a reusable water bottle, which is a healthier option as well as being good for the planet. If your daughter hasn’t yet brought their own bottle in we would be really pleased if they could bring one in over the next few days.

The Autumn Term is when many colleges and sixth forms have open evenings and days.  The Sydenham and Forest Hill Sixth Form (SFH6) open evening will be on Thursday 15 November.

Use the UCAS Progress website to search for Level 2, Level 3 and A Level courses that your daughter is interested in.

And then look at the websites of the colleges, etc, that run that particular course and visit them on their open days.

The BRIT SCHOOL post 16 Open Day is on Thursday 27 September 2018, 16.30 to 20.30.

The Charter School Sixth Form Open Evening is on Thursday 8 November, 16:30 to 19.30.
