Message from the Headteacher

Dear Families

The end of this academic year is fast approaching but we still have a few important weeks of learning and teaching left. We are looking forward to Sports Day on Friday 22nd June, please do ensure that you are aware of the arrangements for students during Sports Day and of the start and finish times. Please follow this link to the letter sent home recently by the PE Department for further information.

Year 10 and Year 12 Work Experience will begin on 2nd July and 16th July respectively. Both offer students an excellent opportunity to experience the world of work and to develop valuable skills that will prepare them for life beyond school. We wish all of our students the best of luck in their placements.

Below is a letter sent into the school by a member of the public which I am very pleased to be able to share with you. It is a moving example of the behaviour of a student who demonstrated what being a good citizen means in practice.

‘I am a teacher on maternity leave and was recently travelling on the 202 bus when I encountered one of your students. I had a baby and a dog with me and she offered to help me on the bus. She then selflessly stood at the front and allowed all the other passengers to take seats. She also helped an elderly woman by picking up her shopping that had spilled out into the aisle. I congratulated her on how kind she had been and I hope she can be showered with praise for being such a fabulous ambassador for the school’.

Please can you ensure that you know where your child is once they leave school at the end of their school day. Students should be making their way home calmly and directly at all times after school. We do not want students congregating in Forest Hill Town centre, or congregating anywhere else for that matter. Home is the best place for your child when they are not in school. We would be grateful if you could reinforce this with your children at regular intervals. A reminder that the Library is open after school every day for private study and that there are a number of homework clubs and after school activities run by staff and students throughout the week.

As ever, I do hope that you have a lovely and restful weekend with your family and friends.

Kind regards

Mrs Lowe

London Schools Year 7 & 8 Athletics Championships

Jada O and Imogen G attended the London Schools Athletics Championships on Tuesday 12th June at Mile End Stadium.

The students had been selected from the LSSSA Athletics competition.

They were very excited and nervous at the same time. Jada was competing in the Shot Put and Imogen in the High Jump.

It was a real traet to watch other athletes compete in their races and events in particular the Hurdles and the crowd was really supportive. We cheered on the sprint events and watched in awe at the 100m races. Some athletes are so fast it's almost incredible.

Jada performed really well although wants to do even better next time. Being at the event has inspired her to join an athletics club specialising in throwing events.

Imogen had to wait until the last event of the day and her nervous tension built up but was taken over by excitement. Imogen took the competition in her stride and finished 4th out of 20 competitors. Imogen also set a Personal Best of 1 m 30. Well done Imogen and Jada.

Overall, it was a fantastic day, that gave us the chance to see the best Athletes in London perform. We are really looking forward next year.

Year 8 Friendly Rounder's Fixture

On Monday 18th June the Year 8 Rounders team played their first friendly rounders fixture of this year against Bonus Pastor School. They were really excited about the match as Sydenham School  has not played a rounders fixture in a while. This is because we have been focusing more on cricket this year. We played two innings of 18 good balls. We fielded first which meant that Bonus Pastor were batting first. At the end of the first innings the score was 8 rounders to 5 ½ to Bonus Pastor.

Going into the second innings, Sydenham School started fielding much more strongly and placing the ball where it needed to be which stopped Bonus Pastor accumulating more points. Our opponents managed to score 3 rounders and we scored 3 ½ rounders, which meant that we won the second innings. However, the combined points were 11 rounder’s to 8 ½ which meant Bonus Pastor beat us overall.

The students enjoyed the game and went away from it thinking about all of the tactics they can use for the next game. I’m sure they will come to training in the future fully prepared to work hard.

Well done to all the girls that took part:
Imogen, Jaida B, Angharad, Claire S, Elspeth, Mikah, Charlotte, Emmanuella and Izzi,
