Welcome to the Sydenham School weekly e-newsletter: Edition 224

Message from the Headteacher

Dear Families

I hope that your Easter holiday was enjoyable and that you found some time to rest as well. The first week back to school has felt productive and positive. You will see from the Newsletter that last term ended with some notable fundraising efforts from the students which enabled several worthy charitable causes to be supported. Developing the reading habits and speaking skills of our students will continue to be an important aspect of the curriculum and the learning experiences we want all students to have. The School Library is a fantastic resource and our students make great use of it whenever possible. The excellent work of our library staff ensures that we are also able to respond to student requests as well as provide a wide range of books that stimulate thinking and encourage students to want to read more and more.

You will see from the HPL item that there are some helpful suggestions regarding how you can support your children to study well. Whilst this refers to exams for older students, of course revising and ‘deliberate practice’ have a place in learning for children of all ages. The exam season is about to begin  in earnest and we would like to wish all of our students every deserved success. As parents, you have a vital role to play in encouraging and supporting your children in their exam preparation, but also in making sure that they are working hard at home and revising diligently. There are a number of after school sessions taking place for students in Years 11 and 13 in order to support them to prepare for their exams. A number of in- school sessions took place over the Easter holiday and I would like to thank all of those members of staff who gave up their time to teach classes additionally.

Finally, I would like to warmly welcome Ms Gostling to the staff team. Ms Gostling joins us as one of our 3 Deputy Headteachers.

As ever, I hope that you have a lovely and restful weekend together.

Kind regards

Mrs Lowe

Sports Relief

Thank you very much to all those students who completed their Sport Relief Mile and donated to this wonderful cause. The following students came in the top 10 in the Mile Run and raised money through sponsorship and donations. Well done everyone!

We raised a total of £981.63. This money will go towards helping lots of people both in the UK and as well as internationally.

Extra Curricular Clubs

The Summer Term extra curricular clubs will begin from Monday 23rd of April. The PE Department has a number of fixtures already lined up for both cricket and rounders and we need our strongest teams competing in those competitions! We encourage students to take part and develop their skills and welcome everyone. However, students need to be coming to training on a regular basis to stand a chance of being selected. All students in Years 7 - 10 should be participating in at least one club per week if they are not participating in extra curricular clubs outside of school. Clubs are great ways of making new friends, developing skills and building confidence.

Any student wishing to take part in Yoga on Wednesday afternoons please see Ms Cantrill in the PE Department for a letter. The price will be £3 per session and is charged per term through Parent Pay.

We have a fantastic netball coach in association with Raider's Netball Club who has started with us. Maureen Gordon will be running sessions on a Monday afternoon from 4:30 - 6:00pm. If you are a keen netball player please do come along to these sessions to improve both your technical skills and your game play. The cost is £10 per month.

Lewisham Book Quiz 2018

On 23rd March, we took two teams from year 7 & 8 to compete in the Lewisham Book Quiz which was held at Addey and Stanhope School. Eighteen teams from nine schools across the borough vied with each other for the coveted silver trophy.
Our teams were so keen that some were in the Library in the week before swatting up on all their book knowledge! Their dedication paid off and saw both our teams achieving joint 3rd place! All of the students who took part had an enjoyable time were awarded medals as well as a choice of book.

Book Clubs in Schools

On the last day of term, we held an Easter craft session where our Y12 Book Leaders joined the Y7 Book Clubbers in making their own bunny and Easter egg bookmarks. We have five more session left of the Book Club this year and have had over 50 Year 7 students benefit from reading and discussing the books with our Sixth Form student helpers. For more information, follow this link: BCiS. We would like to thank the Sixth Form Ambassadors for giving up their time so willingly to support our younger students in learning to love reading.

Lewisham Book Award (LBA)

On 27th April, Sydenham School is playing host to eight other schools in the borough for the Lewisham Book Awards. Students who qualified by reading and reviewing all five LBA titles, will be divided up into groups and given one of the books to promote to a panel of ‘Dragons’. We are thrilled to have three authors attending, and after the event, the authors will be doing a book signing in the Library for any student who wishes to meet them.

The following books will be on sale at a discounted price of £6.00 so if your daughter would like to meet the authors and have a book dedicated in any way, please ask her to come and see the Library staff  in the Library no later than Wednesday 26th April as the books will have to be pre-ordered.

The books will be supplied by Moon Lane Books who are opening a new shop in Forest Hill next week so make sure to pay them a visit!
Happy reading!

Year 7 Kent Netball Tournament

On the 22nd of March we went to a school in Kent to play in the Kent netball tournament. It took about an hour and half to get there, but it was worth the wait. We played 6 matches in total and won our fourth game. Our opponents were very good but we tried our best during every match. The whole experience was very enjoyable and we learnt a lot from it. Each match was roughly 15 minutes long with a half time to break it up. It was a great bonding experience for the team and we feel that we worked very well together. We are looking forward to coming back next year even stronger.

Live! Dance Lewisham 2018

On the 13th of March, the Year 12 dance students performed at Live! Dance Lewisham at Catford Broadway Theatre. The dance students who performed were Ethan, Josie, Daniela and Sophia. Live! Dance Lewisham is an event for young people to express their feelings and show their talent; it has been taking place for 19 years. The students choreographed the piece themselves using their lesson time to practice and they will also be performing it for their AS Practical exam. The performance went very well and received lots of praise. It was performed in front of nearly 800 people.  The piece which was predominantly in a Contemporary genre was fused with breaking movements. Well done to everyone involved.
