|Welcome to the Sydenham School weekly e-newsletter: Edition 187
Message from the Headteacher
It has been delightful to welcome the students back to school and we have been very pleased with the positive start that has been achieved by all year groups. I hope that the recent Christmas break was enjoyable and that you and your children found some time to talk, relax and have some fun together. The Newsletter this week includes some important information about Work Experience both in relation to an exciting opportunity for some placements for students in the Sixth Form as well as an invitation to all students in Year 10 and their families to attend a meeting on Tuesday 10th January 2017, 5.30 to 6.30pm, Main School Hall, in order to hear about the Work Experience placements being organised for all students in that year group.
Students continued to benefit from speakers and opportunities beyond the formal curriculum at the end of last term , which as you can see from the items about the Photography Workshop and the visit to the school by the poet Adisa, were both entertaining and highly engaging.
Finally, I would like to thank those members of staff who were part of the dance performance that students were treated to at the end of last term on the last day during the final assemblies. The staff involved had worked really hard during the term practising their dance moves under the expert direction of Ms Barker. The students really appreciated the show and I know that the staff who performed were also rightly proud of the standard of dance that was achieved in the end. Well done to everyone who took part and thank you very much for giving up so much additional time to make this happen.
As ever, I hope that you have a restful and peaceful weekend.
Just before the Christmas holiday some students worked with Sydenham Lens Artist John Russell. The workshop really inspired our Year 11 GCSE students to get more involved with photography by taking excellent mobile phone images using recommended apps.
As a result of this really positive experience we will be entering the Sydenham Lens photography competition. good luck everyone!
At the end of the Autumn term, 8 girls from Sydenham completed a 12-week Health and Well Being programme. The programme works in conjunction with MEND (Mind Exercise Nutrition Do it). The students had some really positive experiences through learning about different types of healthy foods, cooking and making healthy meals as well as participating in a range of fun physical activity sessions.
|Work Experience Launch|
Paul Goddard, from the Lewisham Work Experience Team, is highly experienced in this field and will be able to answer any questions you may have. We will also have Year 11 students speaking about their placements last summer. We look forward to seeing you there. For more details, see our website, http://www.sydenham.lewisham.sch.uk/letters
Work Experience opportunities with AECOM in the construction industry
Nina Burgher-Toney, the Recruitment & Work Experience Manager of AECOM based in Croydon, can offer work experience placements in the construction industry to our Year 10 and Year 12 students in 2017. Please contact her immediately at firstname.lastname@example.org to request an application form. AECOM offer 2 types of work experience.
One is placing an individual student into a specialist construction department, eg. surveying, etc. The second is a Structured one-week placement – where the student experiences a number of different areas in the construction world. (Places are very limited for the Structured Experience – so please apply as soon as possible. Students can apply for both types of Work Experience). This is a fantastic opportunity for those wishing to get an insight into the construction industry. See aecom.com
There will be a Parent Teacher Association (PTA) meeting Tuesday on 17th January from 6.30pm-7.30pm in the Learning Resource Centre. All Parents/Carers are welcome to attend.
