Message from the Headteacher

Dear Families

As we near the end of this Autumn term, I would like to say well done to all of the staff and students for working so hard for the last 12 weeks or so. We know that in order to be successful, hard work is an inevitable aspect of making progress and reaching goals. Year 11 have started their Mock Examinations this week and have approached them with an admirable maturity. The students are clearly revising well and really want to achieve their very best. They are making the most of the additional activities being put on by the school, including the 'Mock Breakfasts' in the Dining Hall before school. Faculty staff are available on hand during these Breakfasts to speak with anyone who needs some final revision tips! There will be a 'Mock Results Day' at the start of the Spring term. More details will follow.

This week I attended the Haberdasher Aske's Christmas Carol Concert. It was a joyous event, held at Southwark Cathedral, near London Bridge and I was very pleased to attend on behalf of the school.I hope that you are beginning to 'wind down' or 'gear up' for the festive break! As ever, I hope that you have an enjoyable and restful weekend.

Kind regards

Mrs Lowe

Student Festive Lunch 2016

The Christmas dinner for students will be on Thursday 15th December.

Please see the menu above. This is a lovely festive meal that we hope students will enjoy. On the 15th December the kitchen will only be serving the Christmas meal. Iif your daughter does not want to have this meal, she will need to bring a packed lunch in, but may still eat in the Dining Hall with her friends.

The end of term arrangements

The last day of term is Tuesday 20th December. This is a shorter day for students who will leave school at 12.50pm. We will be serving a hot brunch during the morning for those who want a hot meal.

Language Leader Award

We are delighted to announce our new Language Leader Award Programme.  This is a programme that has worked very successfully at other schools nationally and which is supported by the highly thought of institution “Routes into Languages”. It aims to develop leadership skills through languages.  This year nine students have been selected for the programme. The girls are making excellent progress; they are developing their teaching skills as well as showing a fantastic commitment to their Language Leader Award training.

On 29th November we visited Eliot Banks Primary School where they will be teaching French. The girls behaved extremely well making us proud of the very professional manner in which they represented our school. The teachers and students at Eliot Bank were very welcoming and delighted to have us.

Our students observed and supported a primary school teacher teaching French and had the opportunity to meet future students. This is an excellent step forward in our commitment to establish collaboration links with our primary school feeders! Thanks to parents and students. Well done everyone!

Music Technology Cartoon Project

Over the past 5 weeks, the Music Department has been working with year 5 and 6 students from St George’s CE Primary School on a Music Technology project. Students composed music and added sound effects to clips from a Micky Mouse and Tom and Jerry cartoon.

The students involved thoroughly enjoyed coming to the department and having the experience of using the equipment that we have at Sydenham, as well as developing their compositional skills. We are looking forward to running this project with more local primary schools over the rest of this year.

PTA Christmas Drinks,
