Message from the Headteacher

Dear Families

It has been another busy and productive week at Sydenham School. We had our first Open Session on Tuesday when we welcomed prospective year 7 students and their families into the school. Our Prefects and Sixth Form Ambassadors were out in force and as ever did a great job of greeting families and taking them on tours around our superb school site. The feedback we received was very positive and one person tweeted afterwards that “my daughter and I were SO impressed ….. what a lovely school you have. She can’t wait until 2017”.  There are 3 more sessions over the coming weeks and we look forward to welcoming many more visitors to the school.

We are once again offering a mind boggling array of extra-curricular activities including a Senior Flute ensemble, Fitness Club, Media Champs and a number of Science, Technology, English and maths (STEM) clubs. Our early morning Latin sessions have also started and I was lucky to see over 50 students being taught by their very enthusiastic teachers at 7.45am on Wednesday morning! As you can see from the pictures below, the girls were attentive and engaged and it was wonderful for me to experience.

Finally for this week, I am pleased to let you know that the school commissioned an external Safeguarding Audit which took place on Thursday. The verbal feedback confirmed that safeguarding in the school is excellent and that the school community is a safe one. I would like to thank Ms Podmore, Deputy Headteacher, for organising and leading this Audit so well. This is a very important area of school provision.

My first two weeks as Headteacher at Sydenham School have been busy and enjoyable. Please do remember that I am happy to meet with you to discuss any matters that you might want to raise. You can make an appointment with Mrs Lovelace, my PA, if you would like to see me.
I wish you a good and restful weekend.

Early morning Latin classes

The current year 11 Latin students have shown great commitment to their future through attending the three weekly twilight classes in order to obtain their GCSE. These classes, being outside the normal timetable, mean that their school hours are beyond the normal amount though this has not deterred them from their ambitions. They are currently studying translations relating to the Roman army and its organisation.

Some students are keen to continue with Classics at university and are already looking through the A level syllabus. We hope to see them take their appreciation for the Latin language into other studies and areas of their lives. We are proud of their achievements and dedication in the Languages Faculty and they are an asset to the school.

The current year 8 students also mirror this determination through attending one twilight session a week on a Wednesday. They have already shown great promise and enjoy following the continuing saga of Caecilius and his household in Pompeii.
