Message from the Head

Dear Parents,

Very exciting news that Sydenham has been given a partnership with Microsoft. We have officially become one of their showcase schools which is a very exciting proposition for the future bringing in resources, status and ICT facilities for the school. Microsoft, along with a large group of visitors visited the school on Tuesday for tours and talks; well done to Mr Guest for leading on this event and indeed ICT at the school.

Also we had a very successful Year 8 Parents’ Evening at the school this week with parents and students having important conversations about learning and subject specific information. Well done to all involved.

The weather really is very cold now, therefore can I ask parents to ensure that your daughter does have appropriate external weather wear – in other words a coat!

Many thanks and have a great weekend.

Mrs Holden
Headteacher

Online Film Reviewer Stefan Pape meets SFH6 and Sydenham Media Champs

On the 14th December 2015 SFH6 and Sydenham Media Champions (a group of students with particular success and interests in Media) were fortunate enough to meet online reviewer Stefan Pape. After starting off as a sports journalist, he switched to film reviews, and has found huge success. A weekly reviewer for TalkSport, Cosmopolitan magazine and Flickreel, he predominantly writes for website HeyUGuys, where he has interviewed A-listers including Liam Neeson, Tom Hiddlestone, and James McAvoy, along with renown directors Quentin Tarantino and Ron Howard. He also gets first priority in watching films with huge marketing campaigns and hype, such as the recent Star Wars film and The Hateful Eight.

Outlining his life before he went into film reviewing, he spoke in great depth about his path to get where he is today, including his Media degree at university and sports journalism. He stated that every day was different, in that his days can alternate between watching new releases, interviewing big stars, or simply writing his reviews. Students were also able to ask him a range of questions and ask how they can be a success in the industry. Meeting Stefan was a fantastic opportunity and one impossible to pass up. Being able to meet and talk to someone in the same industry I want to go into was an amazing experience.

Holocaust Residential Trip for Year 9 Students

Year 9 have recently got back from a 3 day trip to Amsterdam, to consolidate their learning in History and RE on the Holocaust.

40 students met at 5.30am and made the 10 hour coach journey to the Netherlands, where they visited Anne Frank's House, The Dutch Resistance Museum, The Jewish Museum and Camp Amersfoort, a Concentration Camp that was used to imprison Jews as well as political opponents of the Nazis.

As well as this, students had lots of free time to explore the local area of Zeeburg as well as experiencing a shopping trip in Rembrandt Square.
The girls behaviour was impeccable throughout and the trip was definitely one we will remember.
