Message from the Head

An amazing week at Sydenham….firstly a huge well done to Year 11 who have been sitting their very important Mock Exams at Sydenham this week. They have been brilliant and taken the Mocks very seriously  - well done to all of them and I am sure their Mock results will be very positive. Also this week we had the Christmas concert. Well done to the students who took part, Mr Dottridge, Ms Glass and all of the teachers who organized it and to Maggie Hammond and the PTA for being there to provide refreshments.

We also had a Year 7 Showcase Evening with Year 7 students showcasing different things from their Curriculum – all fantastic.

Christmas has also come to Sydenham with Christmas trees on display  - I have included in this some photos of the main tree in our Main Hall, but also the amazing Science tree and some Year 7 students who were working out the surface area of paper trees that they had made in Maths with Ms Bown

All in all a very busy and productive week – well done to all

Mrs Holden

A Christmas Carol

On Wednesday 9 December, year 8 watched a live performance of 'A Christmas Carol' during their English lessons.  Quantum Theatre put on a fantastic show and the students were enthralled to see the actors, lighting and sound effects bring Scrooge's tale to life. Everyone was certainly in the Christmas spirit after the show.

Accelerated Reader

On Monday 30 November Year 7 had a celebration assembly for Accelerated Reader. The best readers from each tutor group received a Roald Dahl novel and a certificate. Three students: Polly, Eleanor and Maria have read over a million words this term: making them Year 7's first word millionaires!

Congratulations to all the winners.

Inspired By Design’ seminar at UCL Institute of Education

On 1 December Mr Bima took the AS and A2 Product Design students to the University of London for a seminar showcasing some of the top designers in the world.
We heard Matthew Beaven, Chief Exterior Designer at Jaguar, telling us about the development of the Jaguar CX75, which features in the latest Bond movie.  This is an electric car with a mini-turbine which charges the battery, the ultimate hybrid car around!

Julia Georgallis took us through the world of a young designer beginning to make a mark on the design world and we also had a fascinating practical design activity with Pascal Anson, Senior Lecturer at Kingston University.  He had us making various shapes out of just two sheets of aluminium foil – a very taxing task on both our imagination and fine motor skills as we handled the delicate foil.

The day ended with mind-expanding session with Jay Osgerby, OBE, one half of the world-renowned design firm Barber & Osgerby, who won the contract for designing and making the Olympic torch in 2012.  It was fascinating to see behind the scenes of this iconic design project, from testing it in East London with a fan and watering can, to the end product being tested in a BMW wind-tunnel in Germany!

Overall it was a hugely successful day and the chance to hear from a variety of designers all at different stages in their design journey was invaluable.

PE News

Year 7 Indoor Athletics Competition
The year 7’s competed in their third of four rounds of the athletics tournament on Tuesday. They did extremely well and have improved greatly. Our 8 lap paarlauf team won that event and the relay team really improved their change overs. Also it was the first ‘outing’ for our new PE t-shirts. The pupils loved them and they looked very smart. Thank you to the PTA who helped to fund these.

In other PE related news, all pupils have been having theory lessons this week due to the year 11 mock exams. They have been covering diet, nutrition and healthy active lifestyles. We have shown them some hard hitting video clips about the dangers of bad diets which many of them didn’t realise. We’re hoping this will spark a change in their thinking about the food and drink they consume. Do you know the recommended daily amount of sugar per day? 6 teaspoons. And how many teaspoons are in a can of coke? …8! After a year 8 class watched a clip of a 6 year old boy having to have 6 teeth removed due to fizzy drinks it made one pupil throw her drink in the bin. This made me extremely happy.

We are also supporting Jamie Oliver’s petitions, 1 to get a 20% tax increase on sugary drinks and 2 to make food education a mandatory subject. If you are interested please take a look at his website

The PE department wish you all a happy and healthy Christmas.
