STEM club

Last term yr 8 STEM club built a lego space environment for  use with the lego mindstorm robots. The girls built and programmed the robots to perform task on the space station.
STEM clubs are open to all girls with Monday hosting yr7 8 and 9 STEM clubs. Thursdays is yr10 STEM club (girls into engineering) run with the help of a visiting engineer. Every Thursday in STEM club we have a number of creative year 10 girls who take part in our Renewable energy challenge. The project is run over a series of weeks and by the end of it the girls will create a prototype Wind Turbine, Wave Power Generator and a Solar Pumping System.  The winning group will win a trip to wales for a week, so wish our girls luck.  Over the last 5 weeks the girls have been working really hard on creating their Wind Turbines. As you can see from the pictures the girls have created a plan and have now just completed their Wind Turbines. Next week the students will be presenting it to me and the ambassador who helps to run the competition.

Horniman Museum Trip

All Year 7 Students visited the Horniman Museum this week to complete research of masks for this terms Art project. Students were inspired by the detailed drawings they made and demonstrated a good understanding of the elements of art that have been learnt this past term

English National Ballet Dance workshop

On the 17th October 2014 the A Level dance group had the opportunity to participate in a workshop with the English National Ballet.

The warm up was in the style of ballet, it was relaxed but very technical, I found that the dance instructor was really supportive when we didn't understand which made us to feel comfortable.  We then went on to work on a creative piece which focused on different body parts, how they move and how we can also use them when we dance.
We then learned a phrase from a professional piece, which we performed in groups.  We were involved in leading and following and action and reaction exploration which we implemented into our final piece.
To finish off the workshop we numbered the room to match a different body part which influenced our choreography. We were then paired with somebody else and we had to learn their phrase and fuse it into a short piece which was also performed.
From this workshop I learnt new ways to use my body and how to choreograph using different methods. Overall I really enjoyed the workshop. It will be really beneficial in helping me later on in the year with my own choreography.

Madrid Exchange Trip 22nd Oct-28th Oct

Students in Years 9,10 and 11 from Sydenham and Forest Hill School took part in an exchange visit to Colegio Lourdes in Madrid. Their Spanish exchange partners had already visited the UK in May and thoroughly enjoyed the welcome they received from both schools.

Account from Effie Tierney 11N

In the half-term holiday I had an amazing experience of staying in Madrid with my Spanish exchange partner Marta. Each day we visited a new place including the Santiago Bernabéu football stadium, home of the Real Madrid football team, Palacio Real (the Royal Palace), Reina Sofia museum, Retiro park and Madrid theme park. We took part in a 2 hour walking guided tour of Madrid where we learnt about it's history. I was chosen many times to act out scenes as a Queen! We even watched a film in Spanish at the cinema (with no subtitles) and tried churros con chocolate (famous Spanish donuts with chocolate). As part of the exchange we also had to attend lessons in Colegio Lourdes. It was very different to our school, they still have chalkboards in many classrooms! The weather was great, the food even better and the people were some of the most welcoming and kind-hearted that I have ever met!
